A good training log is not a diary of every sensation in the gym; it is a decision tool. Its purpose is to make your next session slightly better informed than your last one by showing whether you are adding productive work, repeating the same workload, or accumulating fatigue that is hiding your progress.

A useful entry might read: “Bench press — 70 kg — 3 x 7 — about 2 RIR — last set slower but clean.” That gives you more information than “bench felt okay.” It also gives you a basis for deciding whether to add a repetition, add load, repeat the session, or reduce work.

- Are total quality repetitions at a given load trending up?
- Is the same workload being completed with lower perceived effort or cleaner technique?

Separate strength indicators from muscle-building indicators
A training log becomes more useful when you know what outcome each exercise is meant to support. A lower-repetition compound lift may be tracked mainly for strength, while a higher-repetition accessory movement may be there to add muscle-building volume with manageable joint stress.
Do not force every exercise to progress in the same way. A barbell squat can be sensitive to load increases, while a lateral raise may be easier to progress through repetitions and control before adding the smallest available dumbbell jump. The log should reflect the exercise, not impose a universal scoring system on it.
Also avoid using total “volume load” as the only success metric. Sets x repetitions x load is easy to calculate, but a larger number is not automatically a better stimulus. Exercise range of motion, proximity to failure, technique, and the muscle groups involved can change what that number means.
Add a short readiness note without turning it into a forecast
One line on sleep, soreness, or general readiness can explain unusual performance, but it should not become a reason to cancel training every time you feel less than perfect. Readiness metrics are most useful against your own baseline.
For example, if you slept poorly but your warm-up moves normally and the first working set feels normal, you may not need to change anything. This is also where internal context helps. Mistakes that make logs less useful
